AV- Documentary Change

After many problems in the development of our documentary "Not in Nottingham" we have decided to change our idea. A Brief synopsis is shown below. This is also the cover letter that Alex Khan our current point of contact was given to explain the documentary we wish to film.

The aim of the documentary is to give a voice to the young people who have experienced trouble or misfortune in the mainstream educational system. We wish to involve and engage any of the participants to give us, and the audience, an insight into their views and experiences surrounding the topic. We also will explore the benefits a place like “stone soup project” can have on young people in this situation and how their futures have been affected (good or bad) from the development at the project. We hope the film will show the audience that young people who may be looked at as outcasts do have valid talents and views along with something to offer the community – and how projects like “the stone soup project” can be influential in drawing this side out of these youngsters.

We would like the participants to view this project as a chance to be involved in a real working brief and hopefully we can pass some experience or knowledge onto the pupils. We would not only like to interview the pupils and gain a scope on what they do/are interested in, but we would like to actively get involved with the making of the film – we will take on their views and opinions because it is in essence their film.

We would also like you to at “stone soup project” to take the opportunity to use or media as promotional tool for the work you do. We would like to offer you a “DVD extras” package where you can host any short films, pictures, photography works, music etc you feel will help promote what you do.

The filming date to commence is the 4th of December 2006.
Prior to this we will do 2 weeks of interaction with the pupils and staff to allow all parties to become comfortable with the project.

Thank you for your help. See you soon.

Design - Psychogeography Re-mapping the City

The aim of this exercise was to re-contextualise the city through becoming a drifter.

Creating a system to record the journy through the city, and at every required point taking a photograph to record the journey. We decided (Myself and Ed Walsh) that we were going to take a random route around the city but record the journey by taking a photgraph everytime we saw or passed a dustbin. Some of the images from are journey are below.

AV - 90s Narrative

Started to gather thoughts and ideas on the depicT 90s film that we shall be doing for stage 3 of the AV Coursework. My first idea is one of which may be a collaberation with a fine art student at NTU. The idea is protraying the digital world of binary in its real time format.

The idea of representing a Byte, MegaByte, GigaByte etc but in its binary format on printed sheets of paper. I have found a program called a Hex Editor which takes any image and turns it into its binary format. The idea is taking a room with nothing but a table, chair and someone sat at the table with a laptop or a computer, next to which is a stack of paper which would represent the information being sent to the computer through the internet. Then from that the blank room would slowly change into a complete binary format expanding from the computer through the desk onto the floor up the walls and eventually covering the celing and the whole room. This would then leave the person sat at the desk completely surrounded and almost engulfed in binary code.

I really like this idea in representing the new digital age, and portraying the background truth of everything digital is built up in this binary code.

This is very much a work in progress and the idea is being built on daily. Stay tuned for any developments in this idea.

Design - City Symphony

My initial thoughts on this assignment is using the fast moving world we live in as my way to show the city symphony. I want to record busy parts of Nottingham both audio and visual. Speed both up and add different abstract effects to try and show different colours and textures that are seen in everyday life but are never noticed because of the fast moving life we are in.

Photos and small video clips will be added to this journal to give a better idea of the idea I have.

AV - Not in Nottingham Documentary

Just had a meeting with Deb to discuss what work we had completed so far towards our documentary. Now we have the initial ideas of what we are going to be doing for it down on paper, we have each individually seperated into our own roles to begin the full pre-production process. I am now generating the questions i'll be asking Jeremy Farrel as one of the chosen interviewees. Ed is breaking down he required paperwork for the proposal and each member will be taking a piece each to complete. Below is the rouch structure of the documentary taken from the AV Web board.

DOCUMENTARY:

TITLE: NOT IN NOTTINGHAM

RUN THROUGH:
The past – Robin hood, Nottingham’s general history
The revolutions of industry – when Nottingham started to grow and how this affected society of the city – when revolution slowed down?
The present – how does the crime culture relate to the past?
Future – what is being done to progress – will it make it better?

Story board:

SCENE1 [them music “not in Nottingham”]
The past:
Shots at the castle (Robin Hood statue)
Introduction to the film – “nottinghams famous exports”

SCENE2
R.H Museum
Interview with historian expert on the “olde” Nottingham
What it was like to live there.

SCENE3
Wollaton park – tranquil setting to chat further more on we learnt from historian.

SCENE4
Caves – “the crime of Nottingham is even at the root of the city”

SCENE5
Industrial revolution:
Cut to the new Nottingham industry and factory’s shut down.
Lace market; archive footage of workers.

SCENE6
Interview with industrial historian in lace market.
How industry and its downfall affected population.

SCENE7
Show estates and worker housing areas.

SCENE8
Archives of crime escalating in Nottingham. Recent years

SCENE9
Crime in the city at the moment. Interview with Criminology guy, in classroom at uni, to discuss relation to the past to crime.

SCENE10
Interview with Police/Council, at there office, to see what’s being done about the crime.

SCENE11
Skyline shot of new city on the grow and show facts of whats being developed in the city

SCENE12
Shot of school children – bright future?

(ED WALSH)

We now have 2 weeks to produce our proposal and have a firm idea of the questions to be asked and how we will collate the information and the shots we have into the finished piece. A lot of the main bulk and structure of what we are going to be doing will most likely be fully decided once we have the interviews completed and we have decided what footage will be of use to us and the documentary. Much editing will be required and a large amount of the footage will be of no use as we are collecting a lot of reasearch to give us a better idea of what we can use to give Nottingham a better image. Loads of work!!!!!!!! Int milk brilliant!

Direction - Initial thoughts on scripts

Emergent Clauses

This script shows really potential to have a larger cast than the rest of the other scripts, amusing scenes such as the 6 santas running through the streets and the very GO attitude that Liam has when training the santas to do their job. Trying to get them enthusiastic and in the role of santa is really quite a perfect example of getting people to be forced into the fact that they need to produce laughter and smiles at a time of the year where they should already be there.

This script does have quite a lot of hidden meaning in it, a dark dreary topic of this is very suitable to the real life dramas that happen on an everyday basis. I may choose to do this script as I think this could be more of a challenge than the other scripts.

Direction - Initial thoughts on scripts

The Clown

This script is rubbish. The harlequin character isn't what you'd expect from a pantomine character that isn't supposed to talk. This really hasn't excited me in the slightest. So much so I ain't even going to talk about it. NEXT!

Not the script i'll be choosing for Stage 2 in the coursework.

Direction - Initial thoughts on scripts

The Biggest Eating Competition in the World Ever. 2!!

This script is another humerous one. The thought of an over excited presenter running around overjoyed at the thought of people gorging themselves with mass amounts of sausages I think is another great example of comedy.

Initially we are introduced to the 3 contestants, Simon the over excited professional food eater with he full support of his family, Caroline the library worker, giving a little banter over to Simon calling herself the DYSON! and Harry the calm and collected more serious contenter.

All in all this script is a fun script to read with a definate comedy value to it, with the amount of energy from the presenter and the randomness of the contestants it really would be one to consider as being a script to produce in this coursework.

Sound Design Lecture

In the sound design lecture today carried out by the guest speakers Keith Brake and Ian Curry I learnt the meaning of Diegetic and Non-Diegetic. The meanings of these are below.

Diegetic - All the sonic elements which abont tin the world of the story on screen. The sonic elements which the characters react to and live with.

Non-diegetic - The sonic elements which are at work purely in the audience domain. Obviously this means the incidental music. But it also means EFX and any sounds which may well be located in the diegetic world. But are designed primarily to trigger audience response rather than an on screen one.

Keith and Ian set us some pieces of work which I shall be placing on here shortly. Safe!

AV - Not in Nottingham Documentary

I have been set the task to research the Industry sector within Nottingham and how its change from having a thriving lace, cigarette, coal and hoisery industry to little or no industry in those sectors left.

I began with the lace industry and went to the Museum of Nottingham Lace to find it had been closed for four years depsite still being full set up as a museum inside, this already shows a decline in the industry even when it comes to preserving the history of it.

I managed to however to secure a meeting with the curator, Jeremry Farrel from the museum on Tuesday 14th in the musuem. From the initial phone conversation it seems that he has a broad knowledge of the industry and how is has changed and affected the city since its decline.

Direction - Initial thoughts on scripts

The Selfish Cut

This script is really pleasing to the eye. Quite funny from the start of scene 1. Sam’s character is your stereotypical “ghetto kid” but with a slight twist, he’s listening to Hanson! To make things more in tow with this classic barbershop wind up, he’s got a massive “bling bling” round his neck and ipod and mobile phone with no doubt a stupidly annoying ring tone.

The Barber is a great character, you can almost see that he picks and chooses which victim his next for the great grey hair wind up. As the barber is listening to Saga FM on the radio and been at that shop for 40 years it seems quite fitting that his next victim is this Ali G style ghetto kid.

A great script, most likely the script I’ll put into the script to screen process for Direction Stage 2.

Holding Pattern

I found ‘Holding Pattern’ very slow, boring and not very interesting without music that makes the audience feel some sort of sympathy or emotion towards Bogdan. In 10 scene’s there isn’t any dialogue so the entirety of the four-minute’s available would need to be padded out with background noise, a sound track or added dialogue to the script.

However I’m sure this script could be produced into something quite good, I find films, programs and certain video art without sound and any dialogue boring as there never seems to be much pace to a script without it.

I very much doubt that I shall be using this script for Direction Stage 2.
