Artefact 6 - Evaluation

In the previous artefact I began testing the effectiveness of the different forms and mediums used within teaching and education. For my final artefact I decided to produce a similar style PowerPoint presentation that did the following; teach the student about a selection of topic’s, question the student and then give feedback to them as they are answering the questions. They were then asked to answer some questions concerning the effectiveness of the different methods of learning delivered.

I used video, still imagery, written text, web links and extra links to slide’s containing hints to help aid the student in answering the questions. Also I attempted to produce a marking system within the PowerPoint slides but was unable to find or develop a macro that would support this function.

With all these different methods of learning combined with feedback given to the student as they answer questions I was able to use all aspects of my practical research to further attempt to answer the question at hand.

The test subjects all agreed during a group discussion that, combining not only the video and written methods but also using the other mentioned methods above, was beneficial to completing the task at hand. It was also said that the use of feedback during the session was really helpful. I produced slides so if the user was incorrect in answering the question, it would tell them so but also offering encouragement through giving the student another try at answering correctly or the option in some case’s for a hint.

I find that this final artefact has helped me tremendously in bringing all of my written, read and practical based research together. I believe now that I am fully able to produce and present my conclusions.

Yes 5 No 0

Artefact 5 - Evaluation

After producing a series of artefacts that were based on different methods of instruction such as the form’s that they were delivered and the mediums they were delivered on I wanted to move onto the effectiveness of these different methods.

I produced a series of PowerPoint slides that taught the users about the Olympics being held in China through different mediums such as video, text, audio, still images and web links.

Once they had digested the information I had given them, I asked them to answer some questions about the topic they had just learnt about. This method of testing was in the form of a written test containing closed multiple-choice questions. I then marked the papers to see how well they had digested the information I had given them.

I decided that I also needed to produce a questionnaire for the users to answer concerning the effectiveness of the methods and the information that they were given.

The results I gained from this were that the written and video instruction together was most effective. Written documents alongside the newer methods of teaching such as video clips and online presence helped tremendously towards teaching and learning. It was also decided that any visual forms of learning such as the images and video that were used were more effective as it put associations in their minds, which essentially allowed them to remember the information they were being given (ie: the V shaped supports on the velodrome symbolising victory).

As mentioned in previous artefacts the results were very wide spread as some of the test subjects believed that it all depended on how you best learn and take in information. All the participants agreed that the option of having a written document alongside other forms of learning had its uses but the other mediums were preferred as that was what they were now used to.

I am now going to produce a similar artefact except this time it would contain items such as feedback, hint pages and a PowerPoint test instead of the printed test paper.

Artefact 4 - Evaluation

My main concerns after gathering my results from the third artefact was that the mediums used were restricting the users learning. The videos were not of the highest quality and sometimes could not be fully recognised this I believe was because of the formats that they were in. I think that if they were better quality that the learning experience would be better and the medium would be more successful as a learning tool.

So I decided to use the same mediums again but alter the tutorials so instead of using video tutorials, I would just use still images with a voice over. Through this I would be able to include higher quality images and with the added voice over. The mediums I believe would then become suitable for learning.

I produced the tutorial then asked a group of 4 people all with different levels of knowledge concerning video editing to look at not only this new tutorial but also all the tutorials and mediums I had used previously.

There was mixed debate on what was believed to be the best medium used for instruction and also the best format (.avi, .mp4, .pda etc….). But we all decided that the video tutorials via the Internet were really useful as were the pod casts I produced. In all cases all of the mediums or formats were useful and successful when accompanied with a written guide sheet.

In the previous artefact evaluation I mentioned that the advanced users were more technologically aware and because of this it aided in their learning when learning via the smaller mediums. After the discussion and use of all the different mediums and formats the subjects believed that it didn’t matter how aware the user was of the technology they were using. It was more to do with the quality of the tutorials and mediums used for teaching.

The following 2 artefacts now are going to specifically look at the effectiveness of the artefacts.

Artefact 3 - Evaluation

For my third artefact I produce video tutorials that would be accessed and used through other known mediums. I had already used video tutorials in an educational setting that were used via a desktop computer. I wanted to produce tutorials for more advanced users that they could use via a handheld device such as an iPod or PDA.

I produced the previous tutorials with a view for them to instruct at the beginner level. These tutorials will be instructing users who have had previous experience with regards to video editing therefore instead of using iMovie I used Final Cut Pro. However I also converted the tutorials from the previous artefact into the formats described below. They were then used on 3 of the 12 previous ‘students’ to see what their opinions were regarding the smaller mediums.

The tutorial for use with Final Cut Pro was produced and I then converted into MP4, AVI and PDA formats. The MP4 version was for use through a classic iPod, the AVI version was loaded onto YouTube for use via the iTouch and the PDA version was loaded onto a HP iPAQ.

Much like the previous artefact I asked 3 people each individually to pick an envelope each containing a different medium. I asked them then to take their chosen medium away then come back 1 hour later to complete the task where I would be able to monitor their progress and ask them questions afterwards.

I asked a further 3 people to do the same except this time I asked them to do the task there and then. I did this for both beginner and advanced levels of knowledge.

With regards to the beginner’s using both sets of mediums they believed that the original methods (Verbal, Written, Video and Audio) were easier to use and more efficient than the mediums used for this artefact. These were also similar conclusions taken from the advanced user’s feedback. However the people who had more knowledge of video editing were also in a sense more technologically aware than the people who had no previous experience of editing and their opinion was that these new mediums were almost just as effective. The only difference was the resolution and size of the video produced minor annoyances.

Artefact 2 - Evaluation

This artefact was very helpful in getting much ground covered when it came to answering the question at hand. The practical element of the artefact allowed me to use different mediums to complete the same task.

I asked 12 people to aid me in this experiment. I wanted each of them to complete a task taught via different mediums, each resulting in the same finished product.

The task was to take 4 video clips and edit them together with transitions and titles concluding with the export of the finished film.

The different methods of instruction were as follows:

• Verbal Instruction – I instructed the test subjects verbally how to complete the task. I was also there to aid them in the completion of the task if at any point they required my help.
• Written Instruction – I gave the test subjects a step by step written document outlining everything that the test subject needed to do. I also included some screen shots.
• Video Tutorial – I produced a video tutorial with no audio instruction. This visually showed the test subject how to complete the task. They had the option of replaying the video clips if at any point they were moving to fast.
• Audio Instruction – I produced a series of audio clips, which allowed the user to have similar instruction as the verbal instruction but this time with no visual aid or help.

I asked 4 people each individually to pick an envelope each containing a different medium. I asked them to take the form of instruction away with them and come back 2 days later to complete the task where I would be able to monitor their progress and ask them questions afterwards.

I asked a further 4 people to do the same except this time I asked them to do the task there and then.

The remaining 4 people were asked to complete the task twice but using 2 different mediums to aid them in the completion of the task.

After my test subjects had completed the task the results I gathered were concerning the time taken to complete the task at hand and also the users comments which were concerning the difficulty levels, their interaction with each other such as discussions had outlining what they believed to be the better medium, any problems that occurred and the individuals preferred method.

The results were very wide spread as some of the test subjects believed that it all depended on how you best learn and take in information. Which was great as this a big part of my question. All the participants agreed that the written document had it’s uses but the other mediums were preferred as that was what they were now used to.

Do you find that as you are able to now access the internet more on the move that you a relying less on actual contact with people with regards to such things as services or support? For instance, online banking?

Yes No

Section 5 – Education, Learning Styles and Usages

Education is a very important part of today’s society, using education as a tool to better ourselves. Many people associate education and learning with going to school, college and then university, however there are many different levels of learning and education.

For instance many people sit their driving tests every year. But the learning behind that is and can be done in many different ways. There’s a practical examination of which the learning is done through practical lessons for example, driving lessons, there is also the theory and aptitude tests of which can be learnt through many different mediums.

Internet, book’s, DVD’s and classroom instruction are just a selection of the different types of learning.

Do you educate yourself or others in any of the following environments?

Home
Educational Institute
Work
Night Class
Other_______________________

If yes to any of the above, are there any modern tools such as computers or smart boards used in that particular environment?

Yes No

If you answered yes, what forms of technology do you use?

Are these tools helpful?

Yes No

Did you find these tools more effective than traditional methods?

Yes No

If yes, why?

Can you think of an instance in the past 12 months of where you have been taught or learnt something new, either a skill or knowledge based, where modern technology has aided in successfully educating you in a way that traditional methods would not? If yes, what?

The Kite Runner

Went to see The Kite Runner last week. I thought the film was very good, emotional and had my full attention. Some shocking scenes and 4 different languages spoken throughout makes it a must see. http://www.kiterunnermovie.com/ check it out.

PRP Artifact 2

For the second artifact I shall no longer be doing a secondary questionnaire anymore as I believe that I have got enough results to allow me to move on. So instead I am going to ask a group of students in pairs to complete the same task but each pair will be taught and instructed through different mediums. Such as Podcast, document, website, verbal etc. I will look at the time spent completing the task for each of the mediums and also ask the participants a series of questions to help try and answer the question at hand.

PRP 1st Artefact Evauation

I believe that this method of research is a very suitable way to begin answering the question of whether or not multimedia technology and technology as a whole has an affect on learning.

I believe that the results I gather will aid me in the construction of further artefacts of which I will use to aid me answering the question at hand.

After completing around 10 questionnaires I realised that the questionnaire I had developed had flaws.

• Section 1 contains questions concerning subject matter such as age and profession.
• Section 2 contains questions about technology, what technology people own use and how often they use it.
• Section 3 contains questions concerning the Internet.
• Section 4 contains questions about mobile technology and it’s uses.
• Section 5 contains questions about education, learning styles and usages. This is where I begin experiencing problems.

Wording of the questions, the point of which I’m trying to make, what it specifically is that I’m trying to find out were only some of the problems. I was unable to gain answers from all of my candidates for all the questions this was partly due to the catchment of the people I was talking to.

However I decided that I was able to still use the questionnaire and the results gained. The idea is that the results I gather will be used as a basis for a second questionnaire of which I will use alongside the original to better my understanding of the general publics thoughts, opinions and experiences with multimedia technology within education.

I collected 60 questionnaires worth of content. I have collated the results and displayed them in the form of bar charts. From these results I can see that a large percentage of people owned computers (80%) and the same amount of people had Internet on their machines at home. And 35% of those people used their Internet connected computers for educational purposes. Each person that said they used their computer and internet for educational purposes said they found them both helpful and more interestingly more effective than more traditional methods.

PRP - Literature Document

I eventually got this essay finished. I hated every moment of it. However I believe that I found suitable sources that were linked to my area of research. It's in, it's done and now I just need to concentrate on the work ahead in terms 2 and 3.

Client Assigned Project

This project was that of a successful one. I shot the advert in one whole day with a view to have another day set aside incase of any shots that require a re-shoot. The Location I used in the end was a penthouse flat in Nottingham, it had full length windows on the 2 longest sides of the room which helped with the lighting. A clear day allowed me to use minimal lighting.

I also used an actress hired from www.starnow.com. Its a website from which you can place up advertisements for auditions available or advertise yourself as an actor. She was really helpful during filming as she had already done many professional shoots and worked in a professional environment in the past. She gave me advice on some lighting aspects, shot ideas and continuity within each shot.

When I came to capturing the footage for editing, I was happy with most of the shots taken. With that I no longer need the extra day of filming.

However I went through some export issues as I filmed in HD and used Final Cut for my editing. I was unable to find a suitable compression rate that gave the required output for hand in. My hand in disk contained 6 different video files. Each with different compressions. The best video compression meant that it wasn't an .avi file but I believed that it was the one that looked the best.

All in all a fun project to work on, I enjoyed the set 6 week time to complete the project, however I did feel that maybe a similar project should be introduced into the 2nd year to allow the students to prepare more for what lies ahead in the final year.

Client Assigned Project

Summary of Plot

A fly on the move evades the dreaded fly swatter only to be crushed by a can of insect repellent.

Character Ideas

I have been thinking about different possibilities of characters that could fit the role with regards to location and also the purpose of the advert.

Housewife
Maid / Butler
Safari
Mr Muscle type character

With much thought I believe that the best character for this advert is a housewife. I think that the product would sell best if the advert was aimed towards housewife/mother’s.

Character Profile / Actress

I believe the character would be white, middle aged, well dressed of medium build.

I have been putting some thought into finding an actress that would fit the profile. I am going to contact local dramatics groups and put up notices in the Broadway theatre. I’ll then hold some auditions in the 3rd/4th week and then start filming during the end of the 3rd week or the beginning of the 4th.

Another option is recruiting an actress from my hometown in Yorkshire. I have had links with the dramatics groups there, and can think of a couple of actresses that would fit the role.

Location

I’m going to look for a family home and aim to use one with a large kitchen area or conservatory.

An advantage of recruiting an actress from Yorkshire is that I could us my own house as a location. The room I would use is big enough to get appropriate lighting set up and enough space for the camera operator to move around.

Script

The fly is moving flying around the room, twisting and turning moving from one side of the room to the other. The housewife steps into view holding a fly swatter. She swings the fly swatter around the room aiming for the fly, this happens two or three times but the fly is to quick and misses almost certain death.

The fly then lands onto a surface and is suddenly crushed by a can of insect repellent. The screen then goes black all except the insect repellent and the slogan which is in white (to be decided).

Ok so i've been planning away and thinking about who, what, where etc.....but after my tutorial session this morning and seeing how much matt had put into his treatment especially with his casting and location work. I felt as if i'd already began to let myself down.

I also forgot about my crew, and how i'll need 3-4 people within that crew to make it a "polished product" like we've discussed in the tutorials.

I have now applied and put an advertisement up on www.starnow.com which is a casting website for various different productions etc.....I am hoping that from this i'll be able to find myself a suitable actress for the production.

As for location's. I'm completely stumped. If I am going to use a crew i'm going to have to find a nottingham location and a nottingham actress, as most people don't hve the time to spend 2 days out of the city as they all have their own work to be concentrating on! I'm going to totally rethink my actor/location situation and i have also strted to think about changing the plot of the advert completely.

PRP Topic - Literature Review

I wish to research and discuss as to whether or not multimedia technology within education has a positive effect on learning and if the use of this technology is an improvement to that of more traditional methods. In this document I shall be researching what tools past and present are used within schools, their advances (i.e. Past – slate and chalk, Present – laptop computer) and what the future holds for education in this digital age.

What’s more effective as a teaching tool, more traditional methods such as the chalkboard introduced in 1801 or the modernised projectors and networked computers that we see in many schools today?

I am going to produce some aptitude tests including things such as memory related questions, mathematics and languages in both traditional and modern methods.

I will evaluate the artefacts by putting them into practice at school’s, college’s and within NTU. I will ask students to complete the aptitude tests and then answer some questions in the form of a questionnaire as to whether the traditional or modern methods were more successful. Along side the test results I should then be able to answer the question.

The year ahead........

I've now been back for a whole week and already there is so much to do! Firstly I am going to talk about the Client Module. This has been seperated into two parts, the first being an assigned project which consists of a 30 second television advert advertising, informing and selling the product, insect repellent. I find this to be a very challenging subject topic and expect to have much fun completing it. I have already began working on ideas which I will pitch to my group on thursday and then hopefully come to a conclusion as to which one I am going to do.

The second part of the client module is a live project. Containing all the aspects of customer and client relations of which a brief will be met. I have found a client based in Harewood, North Yorkshire. It is a financial services company called Godfrey Pearson Limited (http://www.godfreypearson.com). They are currently looking for someone to create them a new identity and multimedia package including website, tv advert, radio advert and much more. More detail will be made in later posts.

Secondly the Personal Research Module. I have had a bit of a rocky start with this module. Finding a research topic really isn't that easy! My initial thoughts was to produce something which discussed the effects on film for different mediums and how the compression rate of that film effected its aesthetic value. I decided against this after discussions with deb and jools as producing artefacts for the research via practice side of the module could prove difficult as it would only be a case of changing a couple of settings when exporting the movie. Hardly a challenge and probably rubbish marks of origonality!

After listening to some of my peers and their ideas in a surgery meeting held by jools last week I now have a better idea of what is being asked of us. I've been looking at technology within education, more so on the mutimedia side of things, such as film and music. How this technology works within education? The advantages of being able to use a multimedia projector instead of a OHP? How the technology helps in different environments such as; in the office, schools (differnt age groups different levels of technology?), medical (children with downs syndrome for instance) and maybe the use of this technology for the rehabilitation of people who have suffered severe trauma from accidents such as a car crash.

There is much information out there on the internet and in the library about this area of research and how it may make a difference in education. I'm in the process of ironing out the finer details of this topic such as what artefacts I am going to produce and how they'll be tested. I'll post that up here once it's done.

Finally SPP3, I have already began looking a job roles and jobs available to see what I should be aiming to do when I finish in 2008. I have a verbal confirmation concerning a 2 week placement working a Sky Sports in London for the Easter break and I am aiming secure another week working with a couple of freelance cameramen nearer xmas/new year.

I have decided that I need to produce an individual online portfolio that is dettached from the Hub available at NTU. It is quite a competitive world out there and i'd rather that when prospective employers are looking at my portfolio they are only looking at my portfolio! So I am currently working on designs and ironing out what software I believe would be the best for me to use. I have only little experience in website design from college level almost 5 years ago. So I am giving myself up until the end of January to complete it as to ensure I don't fall behind in my other modules.

All in all I am glad to be in the 3rd year and I am looking forward to hopefully producing some high quality pieces of work.

Directing - Porfolio Exercise 7 Comments on other work

Portfolio Exercise 7 – Notes and comments on viewed pieces of work.

Henry Cole – Sickend Garden

Grey/Slow moving, not much understanding of what is happening within the 10 shots.

There wasn’t any audio when we first watched the Sickend Garden I assumed that the sounds would have been quite eerie with sound effects such as rustling leaves and crunching of leaves. Second time round watching the movie the sound had been fixed and found that there was a heavy metal/rock sound track over the shots. Very unexpected.

Todd Gledhill – After Death

Abstract with animation within the shots camera movement was good, showing the pixelated shot zooming out from the animated shot to the original image of the dog. Again there was no audio on the original viewing however second time round, the audio was very fitting for a film featuring death.

Blaise Hure

Good story being followed, well composed, good sound/shots/lighting. First impressions that is was very dark but I decided that it all fitted in quite well, showing the wake up from darkness to light.

James Wolley

First impression was, ‘not another morning lest get out of bed and make breakfast film. However the making of an edam sandwich in a dream, made the film a lot more interesting and amusing. The audio track was well composed and fitted well to the selection of shots used.
